Staying Fit Over the Holidays

I’ve been traveling a lot over the past few months, and it has certainly been an adventure!

As some of you may know, I spent the past 2 years living in Germany. And my family and I decided to wrap up our time here with a big European tour.

I took a few photos to share with you. And I’ve got some practical advice for how to keep your training on track even when living it up on a Grand Tour.

Our road trip was an enormous success. We covered a whole lot of ground in just 2 months. From a cruise through the Eastern Mediterranean to the beaches of Normandy, a side trip to Singapore, a hike through the Julian Alps and loafing around London’s Hyde Park, I’ve had to learn how to fit yoga into a hectic nomadic lifestyle.

This experience has taught me a lot about the challenges faced by anyone who travels frequently for their job. And it’s a lesson you can apply during the Christmas holidays as well.

So how did I keep my training on track while the rest of my life was running flat out?

I kept things simple and consistent. Every morning I did a few rounds of the Shapeshifter Flow routine, followed by a few sets of push ups. I also tried to move as much as possible throughout the day, which for me included hiking, dancing or even inline skating.

On the few occasions when I had access to a gym, I kept my workouts to 20-30 minutes tops. I was on vacation after all! My goal was to find a routine I would follow, not some ideal that’d be abandoned because time was too tight.

It was a simple plan. But it worked.

It’s easy to just let it all go on vacation, and to grimly suffer the consequences when you get back. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

I believe the key is to start your day right with a few minutes of stretching, bodyweight exercises, etc. From there, try to keep that momentum by moving as much as possible throughout your day. And my final piece of advice — and probably the most important — is don’t completely go crazy in the food department.

Although I’m primarily vegan/vegetarian by choice, I recognize that travel is a fantastic opportunity to try local cuisine at the source. So when it comes to eating on the road, my philosophy is “When in Rome…”

That being said, while I did eat my fair share of schnitzel and goulash, I always accompanied it with a huge serving of salad.

I believe balance is the key to being healthy and happy, and I try to keep that in mind every day.

  • That’s the key point you made at the end about balance is so vital. You can’t be too extreme with fitness. If you can get a few short bodyweight workouts before you eat major meals it will help speed up your metabolism to burn the excess calories. Of course balance comes in because you do not want to workout before every meal. Being balanced will help tip the scales in your favour.
